Let us discuss the missing piece in the construction outlined by Hints 1-3, “Assuming we are able to draw a line v through O that is parallel to t…”. What makes it possible to easily construct the line v is the fact that all lines parallel to t will converge after refraction on the lens at a single point on the focal plane. Two such refracted lines can be easily constructed using the ellipse and the point O.
